While distributing books to rural regions is a rewarding job for us at PEN Trust – we need your help to make it a more efficient project. While visiting many of the rural schools that have already received books from PEN, we find many schools that do not have the resources for shelving units or building structures to house the books properly. Books are often left in Headmaster’s offices for security reasons and thus the access for students is limited.

PEN Trust in conjunction with the regional government of Singida recently distributed over 23,000 books. The consignment consisted of 10 secondary schools, 14 primary schools and one regional library, many having multiple consignments. The handover to the individual schools occurred while visiting the region with guests from Books For Africa.

Brad Mattson and Deb McDonald from Books for Africa recently visited PEN Trust. Brad is the Warehouse Manager and Deb is the Assistant Director and is in charge of arranging our shipping. It was great for them to see the entire process from donation of books in St. Paul, Minnesota to a small child in a rural Tanzanian village.

Mango Church has had another improvement recently thanks to a generous donation from a friend of the Mungwe family. While the NW Ohio group was here, we had the opportunity to add a new floor to the church. With the help of church volunteers and some of Mungwe’s borrowed construction crew, the floor was finished in half a day.

Seven guests from the NW Ohio area recently visited. They had busy schedules in order to see a glimpse of what we do at PEN Trust. They helped in various activities, including stamping and sorting books, distributing books, teddy bears and food among other things.

We were honored that Books For Africa chose PEN Trust to be one of the recipients of a USAID grant and received a forty foot container of brand new books from Pearson Publishing.
